PET manufacturing process
The basis of the classical scheme for the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET granulate) for food purposes is the process of polymerization of the main raw material: ethylene glycol (EG) and terephthalic acid (TFA) by polycondensation in a melt.
To produce a food grade polymer a subsequent solid phase of pre-polycondensation (SSP) is required, which increases the molecular weight of the polymer and reduces the acetaldehyde and ethylene glycol content down to allowable values.
Technology 2R-MTR® (Melt-to-Resin*) supplied by the company «Uhde Inventa-Fischer» is the most modern of the existing technologies for the production of PET food grade bottles.
The use of 2R-MTR technology eliminates the need for solid phase polycondensation (SSP) and allows the production of high molecular weight PET for food purposes with improved characteristics.
The absence of the SSP unit allows to shorten the time of polymer production, which positively affects the qualitative characteristics of PET.
Through the use of 2R-MTR technology®, PET with a trademark EköPet manufactured by «Ekopet» has a number of advantages, such as a lower melting point and a lower degree of crystallinity.
The spherical shape of the pellets and the absence of the SSP installation ensure minimal dust content in the product.
